We recently discussed a new drug that has come on the market called “bath salts”, which can cause extreme psychosis and violent behavior.  There’s another illicit drug on the market today which has a history of causing these same symptoms in users – PCP.

Phencyclidine – also known as PCP, Angel Dust, Hog, Ozone, Rocket Fuel, Shermans, Wack, Crystal, and Embalming Fluid, is a club drug, often used at raves.  In fact, it’s been found that tablets sold as ecstasy were found to also contain PCP.

Usually, PCP is smoked using a “dipper” – a cigarette made of marijuana, mint, parsley, oregano, or tobacco which has been saturated with PCP.  Typically the “dipper” is saturated is by dissolving the powdered PCP into ether (an inflammable chemical used as an inhalant to cause unconsciousness in a patient before surgery or some such procedure) and then soaking the cigarette in the PCP/ether mixture.

Users of PCP often get a disconnected feeling, along with feeling of invulnerability and strength.  It causes hallucinations, and can cause severe mood swings and amnesia.  Some users have experienced extreme paranoia, along with violent hostility.  Others have extreme anxiety, suicidal thoughts, psychosis, and more.

When taken in high doses, PCP can cause a drop in blood pressure and breathing, along with nausea, drooling, loss of balance, seizures, coma, and death.  Further, death while using PCP may occur due to accidental injury or suicide while the user is still high on the drug.

PCP is addictive, and some of the signs of addiction are memory loss, difficulties with speech and learning, depression, extreme weight loss, as well as extreme mood swings and suicidal thoughts.

Originally, PCP was developed as an anesthetic, but it was deemed too dangerous for human use.   Later it was used as an animal tranquilizer.  It’s now completely off the medical market and onto the streets, creating addicts and wreaking havoc.

We have a long-term inpatient program which has been proven effective in getting people off these addictive drugs and back onto the path of life. The program consists of removing the drugs from the body with a very extensive detox program.  Physical cravings have been proven to cause relapse.  The Narconon New Life Detoxification step removes these drug residuals and diminish or eliminate cravings.  Then, the rest of the Narconon program addresses the life reasons for addiction.  The vast majority of our graduates go on to live successful, drug free lives.
