Tobacco, Alcohol, Marijuana, Prescription Drugs

Prescription Drugs are now one of the top three or four most commonly abused substances.

It’s true! The face of the drug world has changed over the years.  While tobacco and alcohol are still listed as the top two most abused drugs in America, marijuana and prescription drugs are both vying for the number three spot.

Prescription drug abuse is really difficult to track, but the results of a recent study on the subject show that a staggering amount of people abuse prescription medication.  It’s indicative that prescription drug abuse may be higher than even marijuana abuse.

Here are a few things you may not know:Marijuana abuser

Many users mix prescription drugs with other substances, like alcohol or pot.  This can make for an extremely dangerous combination.  Marijuana – when used long term, which many baby boomers have been doing since the 60’s – can cause heart problems.  When mixed with a prescription medication like Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall, and even an over the counter cough medicine, it can cause things like heart attack, stroke or death.

Additionally, when marijuana is bought from a dealer, it’s often mixed with one or two other drugs to get the user addicted to harder substances (mostly unknown to the user).  Some things that get laced into marijuana are meth, cocaine, LSD, heroin, and more.  This adds additional risk when smoking something which is supposedly “natural”.

If you know someone who seems “out of it” a lot, who is constantly on medication, or who is constantly giving non-sequitar answers to questions, talk to them.  It may be that they are abusing drugs which are more harmful to them than they first supposed.
